Riviersonderend is a small town on the freeway between Cape Town and Gqeberha (formerly known as Port Elizabeth). The town was founded in 1922 and the architecture of some of the oldest buildings is Art Deco. The supermarket on the main road is one such building. It is not in very good state, but with a bit of judicious cropping, the beauty of the architecture stands out.

A photo of a pale beige coloured building with three seets of recesses which house windows and breather boxes.

My house in Riviersonderend is a blend of Art Deco ship architecture and Cape Dutch architecture. The builders built according to Art Deco form, then pivoted to Cape Dutch Architecture with the small gable at the top of the square front.

A photo of a blue painted house. It has a square ship architectural front with a a small rounded gable on the top.
there are with embellishments across the front edifice.

I live in the centre of Cape Town and there is some really great architecture around. I love art decor and there are a number of really fine examples of that type of architecture.
Here are some pictures of buildings in Cape Town. I will keep updating this page as I find more buildings that take my fancy.

    Enjoy.

Lets start with one of my favourites overlooking the Company Gardens

Then of course the Centre of the Book. Not art deco, but still pleasing to the eye.

At the bottom end of the Company Gardens is St Georges Cathedral. Lovely Anglican architecture in the local Table Mountain sandstone.

The Methodist church on Green Market Square is a beautiful structure.

A mosque holds its own against the surrounding sky scrapers. A lovely softening of the hard concrete jungle that surrounds it.

Talking of concrete jungle. I was looking for the flowing lines of art deco and found this brutalist passage way.

    And this one too.

Also on Long Street two interesing frilly fancy buildings.

And to round off this late Victorian building. A bit worse for wear, but still beautiful.

I went for a walk this morning and found pictures of some really interesting architecture.
    There a more pictures here.

Art Deco really moves me. I love it.

But Cape Town is not limited to just Art Deco. What would you call this? Faux Victorian?
    Dunno but it is fun
