Fungus Time

Some years ago, there was this huge tree across the road from where we lived and for reasons lost in history the council was persuaded to cut it down. Instead of removing the tree entirely they rather strategically left the huge trunk lying on the pavement and sculpted it into a bench. Slowly the trunk started to rot and eventually the bench disintegrated. The rotting wood made the trunk a perfect bed for fungi. After the recent rains the fungi moved in and provided a colourful display. For scale, the caps are larger than my hand. iNaturalist says it is probably a Gymnopilus palmicola.

Wasp Larvae

Some years ago my wife and I found a tiny insect. I photographed it (of course and posted it to iNaturalist and it was identified as a Planthopper. You can get an idea of how small the insect is by the arm hairs surrounding it. I ignored the dark thing on the back of the insect and I forgot about the observation. Two days ago someone saw my photo, took one look at the dark thing on the back of the insect and identified it as a wasp larvae.

A photo of a bright green insect with a white tail and red eyes. It is sitting on someones arm
The larva is a tiny creature sitting on the tail of the insect. It is brown with white segments.

White Breasted Cormorants

During a visit to Intaka Bird Sanctuary we were treated to the sight of white breasted cormorants basking in the sun and in one case, heading out of the district.
