Lions Head has become a popular place to watch the sunset. Every night we watch people descending the peak after dark, their head light visible as bright dots in the darkness. To give some time frame the picture here were taken over a period of about 30 minutes, another time indicator is that you can see a star setting over Lions Head.

We visited Cape Point Nature reserve and got a bit suntanned, a couple of new birds and as usual some really great images,

Its a shark, really. How do I know? It moved faster than the surrounding kelp. Seriously, they were not very big and didn’t seem to take much notice of humans in the water.
Platbos on the Atlantic Side was so very beautiful.

My grandfather bought and used extensively an Edison Coffin Lid Cylindrical Record player. My father inherited it, and I in turn inherited it from him. It looks like this:
As evidence of his usage, there are 180 cylinders. The cylinders look like this
The name of the artist and the “cut” is embossed on the end of the cylinder.
The cylinders were packed in cardboard tubes. This is a tube and a cylinder.
The player was spring driven, here is a picture of the handle and, in the framed photograph above it the original owner of the player. The little baby is me. I haven’t changed much. The spring drove a threaded bar ensured that the needle moved across the cylinders length.
The sound was produced by a needle causing a diaphragm to vibrate at the apex of a curved pyramid. It was, if you like a mechanically driven horn.
Volume control? You stuffed a piece of cloth into the narrow part of the horn. The cloth you can see in the next picture is one of my fathers old vests. Just maintaining familial contact I guess.

Crow
The air gently rises, I’m called, I’m called
“Spread now your wings, fly free, into the sky”
My wings impatient to ride the wind soaring
Softly call me to take the rising thermals
I spring away and fall before my wings
Gracefully open wide and strong
And bear my weight and break my fall
ends soft and soon begins my turn
Spiral, around, around, rising on water
Driven air, rising from plunging water
Gravity fueled, spring driven, seaward bound
It powers me up on wide spread wings.
I climb up, toward toward vast blue sky
Curving around the rising column
I’m grace, perfection, control, ease and
And above all master of the air
The ground recedes, the dry earth
Expands, stretches, and soon I high
Way above I fly, because I can
Not because I must and I am
Lord of all I survey.
