Black Pearl
I search, diving down through still pellucid water.
Into the deep nightlike deathly darkness.
Now stealthy cold exiles living body heat
And growing darkness is all around me
My legs thrust me into the deep down down.
Away from air, from light, eyes stare grasping
The last fine shreds of light, in growing dark
Finally fingers frantic fumble futily
Slipping off coldly hard mirror surfaces.
Airless clenched teeth fingers searching
Now dancing dots in sightless eyes the cold
Darkness inside matches deathly outside
At last instinct drives my dying body up
Seeking the air and light I need for life
Empty handed airless racing upwards
Airwards, lightwards, lifewards empty handed
Doomed to dream of pearls so far below.
